Happy Deepavali Part II

Last week, we let the our children to "make" their own coloured rice, and this week, it's time for them to stick the coloured rice on the Rangoli ( kolam ) pattern.

Due to our child's age, teacher has pre-draw the Rangoli pattern for the children. So now, it's up to them to decorate the Rangoli with the coloured rice.

First, apply some glue on the paper. Then choose a colour and sprinkle on it. Slowly and steadily.

Happy Deepavali Part I

In conjuction of Deepavali ( Diwali ) Festival, this week, teacher has introduced the history of Deepavali to children. Deepavali which also known as Festival of Light are celebrated by Hindus. Deepavali is celebrated for five days according to the Hindu Calendar. They will light up the diya ( oil lamp) around the house, eat Sheera ( type of dessert ), Lapsee ( type of sweet porridge ) Kheer ( type sweet pudding ) during Deepavali. They will decorate Rangoli ( also known as Kolam ) which make by coloured rice, sand or salt in front of their house to welcome the visitors.

After the lesson, our children are ready to make their Rangoli now:)

Part I - making coloured rice

First, children will pour some rice into a bowl.

Then, mix a little bit of vinegar and food colouring in a container.

Pour the coloured water into the bowl and stir the rice with chopstick.

Finally, bake the coloured rice with oven.

Baking Muffins

It's Little Chef time again. Every month, we try to conduct a cooking lesson for our children. Therefore, they love every Friday so much. This time, our children are baking their own muffins. Since it was not the first cooking lesson, most of the children managed to do it neatly and follow teacher's instructions.

First, children pour the four into mixing bowl.

Add in egg, water and margerine.

Then mix the ingredients with the mixer.

Pour the mixture into the mould.

Lastly, put the mould into the oven and bake it.

Birthday Celebration

October 6th was our little friend, Kang Zheng's birthday. Mummy bought him a cake to celebrate with other children in the center. Children were happy with the goodies bag, of course :)

Lovely Lantern

It's Mooncake Festival again. Children are making "paper lantern" which cannot be lighted up :p

First, they need to decorate "Mickey" shape lantern with some coloured paper (pre-cut by teacher).

Then they need to paste transparent paper on the both side of the Mickey.

Lastly, older children have stapled both side of the Mickey together and stuck the candle holder with teacher's assistance.

It is craft time again. This time, they are making octopus.

First they need to paste coloured paper on the paper cup.

Then they need to paste the eyes on the paper cup.

Children learn how to cut strip from the coloured paper.

Finally paste the "tentacle" at the paper cup.

And these are their final works :)

Baking Cookies

Today, children are very excited about baking their cookies. We believed that children do not have chance to bake cake or cookies at home. Even if parents do bake cake or cookies at home, they normally will not allow the children to "mess" around in the kitchen. Therefore, we decided to let our children to experience how to bake their cookies.

First, teacher introduces "flour" to the children. They take turn to pour the flour in a mixer bowl. Then they add in the "butter" and "egg" and mix it with mixer.

After the dough are done, children use mould to cut out the shape of the cookie and sprinkle coloured rice on it. Finally, teacher help them to put the dough into the oven and bake.

This week, children have learned how to make egg sandwiches themselves. First teacher showed the raw egg to the children.

Then, teacher let the children to put the egg into the pot.

Be careful, the water is hot.

After the eggs are cooked, children started to peel the eggs.

Growing our very own green beans

Lifecycle of a Butterfly

After a long Chinese New Year holiday, children and the teachers are back on the track again.

Today, we are having a craft lesson on the topic of caterpillar. Since we are going to paste a caterpillar, we decided to show the children on the Lifecycle of a Butterfly. Children are all excited about the video clip that we had shown to them.

Is Your Child Struggling With Reading?

Dyslexia is a reading disorder, the most common type of learning disability in children. It is not due to a vision problem or lack of early education, but is believed to be a brain-based abnormality affecting a person's ability to read. A child has a higher risk of dyslexia if someone in the family has this condition.

A dyslexia child may appear average or bright when talking, but has difficulty when it comes to reading and writing. This often cases the child to struggle with his studies, leading to poor grades in school. Over time, the child may feel "stupid", frustrated, have low self-confidence, or develop other emotional problems.

If not treated early, dyslexia may prevent a child from achieving his full potential, academically or socially. But don't misunderstand dyslexia children as "dumb". On the contrary, they ofeten exhibibt strong talents in others areas, such as music, sports and art.

Dyslexia is a lifetime condition. However, it need not be a source of your child's frustration or a barrier to his success. With early intervention, a dyslexia child can learn to overcome his inability and to achieve in school and in life. Therefore, know the common signs to help detect dyslexia early in the child.

Common Signs of Dyslexia
- Delays in speech
- Learning new words very slowly
- Mirror writing
- Reading very slowly, having difficulty reading single words
- Poor spelling
- Poor short-term memory and short attention span
- Difficulty following multiple-step instructions
- Having problems with the concept of time
- Having trouble in sloving mathematical problem
- Difficulty in coordinating left and right movement

Once dyslexia is diagnosed, the doctor or psychologist will recommend a remedial education programme for the child. The remedial education programme is specially designed for dyslexia individuals. The programme involves specially-trained teachers or reading specialists to teach specific techniques and stratefies that help dyslexia to learn to read, write, spell and understand language better. A dyslexic child would be able to learn like the rest of his classmates when he applies these techniques and strategies.

Is Early Childhood Education Important to Your Child?

The benefits of early childhood education have long been disputed. It is hard to deny the opponents opinion that children have always grown up to be intelligent and reliable young adults without the benefits of early childhood education. Child psychologists and teachers for early childhood education point out that there are many benefits including: the child being ahead when they start formal education, having a good foundation for continued learning, having a grasp of peer relationships, having higher self esteem, and better enjoyment of the learning process.

Early childhood education will teach your child the basic skills necessary to be a success once your child starts his formal education. During early childhood education your child will learn to write his name, count and do basic math problems such as grouping objects, learn the colors and shapes, and recognition of first words. Your child will be placed in a classroom with other children. By playing and learning with other children, your child will learn how to deal with day to day situations. Early childhood education provides your child a means in which to learn to share toys, to communicate thoughts and ideas, and to deal with their emotions.

Children who have had opportunities for personal growth have higher self esteem. Imagine how happy your child will be when, during the first day of formal education, he/she already knows how to spell their name, what the date is, and how to tie their own shoes. Your child will be praised by his teachers and peers for his knowledge.

Research studies show that children who have an early childhood education go on to do better in school and are more successful in adult life.
